The Ontario Volleyball Association announced Thursday morning it has postponed the start of the indoor competitive season until January 2021.
Tournaments normally begin in November, but that start will be delayed by at least two months. The Northumberland Breakers are the local competitive club and often host OVA tournaments.
“A decision of this magnitude was not made lightly. The health and safety of our members are of utmost importance and a competitive start date prior to January 2021 appears to pose too many risks in relation to the contraction and spread of COVID-19,” stated a release from the OVA. “There is still a great deal of uncertainty regarding the timelines of revised government regulations and public health requirements with respect to team sports. Therefore, through collaborative conversations with public health authorities, as well as extensive contingency planning with Volleyball Canada, member clubs, and provincial volleyball association’s across the country, the decision was made to postpone the start of the indoor season.”
Meanwhile, the OVA has also modified the Tryout Window Policy, effective immediately, and includes: re-opening the early re-signing period that closed on June 15 to be extended to Aug. 31; and there are no exclusions on which age class athletes can be re-signed to the club and/or team. If any athlete participated on a competitive travelling team last season, that club can send a re-signing form to them. Anyone from 10U to 18U can be re-signed (previously re-signing was only for the 15-18U divisions).
The OVA is working on the Indoor Return to Play/Activity Protocols.
I spoke with Carrie Campbell, the OVA’s manager of indoor programs, to get some additional comments. Click the play button above to hear what she has to say about why organizations and teams need time to prepare, what could happen if the OVA gets the green light to proceed sooner and her thoughts on why Cobourg is a great spot for volleyball.
Every summer, Cobourg is a host for OVA Beach Tour events. The Beach Tour was already previously cancelled by the OVA for the 2020 season.
