JG Sports Media’s latest audio interview guest is former Cobourg Collegiate Institute runner Kate Current, who has been competing the past four years at the university level and was recently named the Western Mustangs Female Athlete of the Year.
In this interview, we talk about how Kate got into running competitively, her success at CCI, why she chose Western to continue her education and athletics, the challenge of transitioning to university and all of her accomplishments from the university level the past few years.
On what she learned from her time at CCI, Kate says “you have to have fun with what you’re doing. Ms. Watson always made it so much fun and she always motivated us to really reach our potential and I think that’s something that I carried through into university, just not to get too serious with yourself and just take a step back and appreciate the process of getting fit and getting fast.”
Kate’s highlights from this past season include a seventh place finish at the Ontario University Athletics cross-country championships and a fifth place finish at the USports track and field championships which qualified her for the FISU World University Games in Morocco in March, however that event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In track and field, Kate won gold in both the 1,500 and 3,000 metres at the OUA championships and captured a silver in the 1,500 metres at the USports championship.

NOTE: While we wait for local sports to return following the COVID-19 pandemic, a big part of JG Sports Media’s website content will be audio interviews, like this one.
Guests will include representatives from local sports organizations as well as other notable guests, many who have ties to this area and even some who don’t.
