Day 13 of my Olympic audio interview series features a wrestler who competed at three Olympic Games and earned a medal at each…Tonya Verbeek. She’s also the head coach of the national wrestling team.

In this interview, our discussion includes Tonya working with young wrestlers in the past, including in Cobourg, how Tonya got into wrestling when she was in Grade 11, women’s wrestling becoming an Olympic sport in 2004, her greatest competitor Saori Yoshida who defeated her in the gold medal matches in 2004 and 2012 and the semifinals in 2008 (she won bronze that year), what she enjoyed about her Olympic experiences, the team aspect of wrestling and what she enjoys about coaching.

NOTE: While we wait for local sports to return following the COVID-19 pandemic, a big part of JG Sports Media’s website content will be audio interviews, like this one. Guests will include representatives from local sports organizations as well as other notable guests, many who have ties to this area and even some who don’t.

I love the Olympics and this series will run from July 24 until Aug. 9. This is the time the Games would have been on before they got postponed until 2021.
