Day 6 of my Olympic audio interview series features a retired beach volleyball player who competed at three Summer Games…Mark  Heese.

Heese won bronze with longtime partner John Child at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta and placed fifth at both the 2000 Games in Sydney and 2004 in Athens.

In this interview, our discussion includes Mark’s work with younger athletes, including at Cobourg’s beach in the past, his memory of seeing Terry Fox in person as a child, his dad’s canoe racing career which included competing at the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo, how he got into beach volleyball and later became teammates with John Child, his Olympic experiences and who Canadians should be watching in beach volleyball at next year’s Games.

NOTE: While we wait for local sports to return following the COVID-19 pandemic, a big part of JG Sports Media’s website content will be audio interviews, like this one. Guests will include representatives from local sports organizations as well as other notable guests, many who have ties to this area and even some who don’t.

This Olympic series will run from July 24 until Aug. 9.
