Cobourg Lawn Bowling Club closed

The Cobourg Lawn Bowling Club is currently closed to bowlers in accordance with advice from the government, Bowls Canada, Ontario Lawn Bowls Association (OLBA) and the Town of Cobourg.

At this time, all May and June open tournaments have been cancelled and it is unlikely that any open tournaments will be held in July, August and September. The club usually holds 10 open tournaments every season and income from those tournaments (entry fees and sponsorship) will be lost to the club.

It is also possible that the club will have to cancel the nine in-club tournaments scheduled throughout the summer. Again, May and June tournaments have already been cancelled.

This time of year is the club’s big recruitment drive with an Open House scheduled in May and free lessons throughout June. That will not happen and it is difficult to predict the long-term affect of that on membership.

It is essential that the greens are properly maintained despite the closure and The Town of Cobourg has granted the club permission to perform essential maintenance whilst following rules on social distancing and cleanliness

The club is hopeful that as restrictions are lifted some club bowling will take place later in the season. Bowls Canada is working on protocols to be followed when lawn bowling re-starts.

The Peterborough Lawn Bowling Club was due to hold the Canadian U18 and U25 championships this season. That has now been cancelled but Peterborough will now host in 2021.

Short Mat Bowling

You may or may not know that some club members play short mat bowling at the Cobourg Community Centre twice a week.

In the last few years this has become more organized with the formation of the Canadian Short Mat Bowling Association. The national championships were held at the CCC in November 2019 and that was also a qualifier for the world championships which were due to be held in Belgium in March. Four Cobourg members were part of a 20-strong team but the championships were cancelled and will now be held in March 2021. Cobourg will host the national championships again in November 2020 assuming there are no restrictions in place at that time.
