Angels cancel annual Paul Currelly Tournament

The Cobourg Angels girls softball association issued an update to its website on April 23.

“Things are changing at a rapid pace, so there is more that is subject to change, but here is what we do know at this time,” it noted.

The longtime annual Paul Currelly Tournament, which was scheduled for June 5-7, has been cancelled for this year.

“The Town of Cobourg has restricted access to all facilities and diamonds until May 30th at this time and could be extended at their discretion. We will not be re-scheduling for this year.”

There are a lot of unknowns as it relates to league play for both the house league and competitive levels.

For competitive teams, the Provincial Women’s Softball Association (PWSA) at this time is still planning to host qualifying tournaments and grand championships, the Angels noted.

A May 2 update from the PWSA noted the organization “will be extending the current suspension of all activities until May 19, 2020.”

It also stated Softball Canada has extended the suspension of its operations through May 31, but to date have not cancelled any Canadian championships and the Eastern Canadian Championship committee “has determined at present to continue with all championships for 2020.”

“Given we anticipate a staggered return to play based on the varying municipalities as well as government regulations on mass gathering numbers, we will be reaching out to the Associations and then with the teams by division in a series of town halls and surveys in order to work collectively toward what the partial season/Provincial Championships may look like,” the updated also noted.

Cobourg is currently scheduled to host a U14 Tier II qualifying tournament July 24-26.

Meanwhile, the Angels also announced that in the event the season gets cancelled, families that have already paid registration/fundraising fees can transfer the registration forward to the 2021 season and will not have to pay any increased fees for next season.
